Sneak Peak
Being stuck in the house for a week wasn't all bad. I spent quite a bit of time listening to old thrash albums. Hal dropped by and we had a good time watching Repo Man and cutting samples from the film's audio track. I hate to say it, but Repo Man is a pretty incredible movie. The subtlety with which the existentialist themes are delivered is uncharacteristic for a low budget sci-fi flick but ultimately very satisfying. Definitely fun.
As the upcoming OvA album is nearing completion, There were only two songs needing to be finished; the terminally stalled acoustic version of You Are In My Vision and a cover of It Must Have Been Years. Having Hal over at the house got me motivated to get to work on some of the songs, so I got the Repo Man samples and the Numan samples together. Admittedly, the end result comes across as a bit more Repo than Numan. That's due to the fact that I spent quite a bit more time manipulating the Numan samples over the past few weeks, so they're just about impossible to pick out.

On the technical side, this song contains 31 different samples. The main loop (The one that ends with the squealing tire sound) and the vocal parts are the only ones that didn't really get chopped and manipulated beyond recognition. I guess the last thirty seconds is fairly distinctive too provided you can make it out through all the effects. I don't know exactly how many edits there are in the final piece. I'm guessing somewhere near four or five hundred. It took a lot of reprocessing to get the sounds I was after for most of the low frequency stuff. That means several trips through the EQ and smoothing algorithms before they sound right. It took the better part of six hours to finish. I'd up that estimate to ten hours if we were to include the time taken to initially cut all the samples. It was composed entirely in Soundforge without the use of any looping tools or multi track editing. All the loops were cut with a handheld calculator and each sample was added to the final song through mixing during cut and paste operations. It's not quite as complicated as it sounds, almost, but not quite.
Like most good electronic music, it's best enjoyed on good headphones whilst laying on the floor in the dark.
